With the advent of technology and increasing number of web pages it became evident that maintaining a central repository had become impossible. Thus began the quest of search engines like Yahoo! These search engines crawled through the known web pages to find more new pages by following the hyperlinks. This process of following links to find new pages is what we call as crawling today. Crawling helped search engines in finding pages which could never be found otherwise. One specific reason for loss of discovery was that the content of these pages was not readable for search engines. A good example would be a web page containing a video but no text. I hope now you understand why Youtube asks for the title, description, category, location of shoot and corresponding tags after you upload a new video. So though the numbers of file types keep increasing, the ways in which you can utilize these files while maintaining their discoverability has also multiplied. Crawling can be defined as a process in which search engine scans through thousands of pages in search of adequate information, new update content and links. In this process every search engines use “bots” in the case of Google, it is “spider” which is an algorithm that defines how often a page needs to be crawled.
Indexing is a process where storing and sorting takes place. Here search engines keep track records of phrases or words that are present on the page at different locations and sort them accordingly. It is just like saving a page bit little bit of information about it as a title and for this process Search Engines Use Massive servers.
Ranking is the phase where search engines judge and rank the websites based on “How well they are optimized” which furthermore includes backlinks, content, interface etc. list vast.

The data collected by search engines is copied and stored with their index. The founders of Google Sergey Brin and Lawrence (Larry) Page mentioned for the first time how relevance of search results can be improved while submitting their University Paper in 1997. They explained the anatomy of a large-scale hyper-textual search engine. The fact that they invented the name Google from the spelling of googol or 10100 establishes their vision of dealing with very large scale searches.
